Why you should be eating more Scottish Venison

Venison is sustainable, healthy and delicious.

Combining these, we believe that venison is one of the best possible meats you can eat.

Sustainability

Wild deer are part of Scotland’s natural ecosystem.    Deer utilise marginal upland and lowland areas unsuitable for conventional agriculture, thereby maximising land use efficiency.

Managing populations prevents overgrazing and is an essential part of ecosystem management to preserve biodiversity.  This is necessary to maintain an ecological balance in the absence of natural predators.

There are lower carbon emissions compared to intensive livestock farming (no housing, heating, or transportation of feed is required).  Local processing and short supply chains also reduce carbon emissions adding further to the eco credentials of wild Scottish venison as the first choice for the modern carnivore.

Healthy

Venison, compared to other red meats gram for gram is the highest in protein and is the lowest in saturated fats.

Venison provides a broad spectrum of micronutrients that are bio-available,  it is a particularly good source of iron, zinc, CLA, B vitamins, selenium, Omega3 and Omega6.   These nutrients are available as supplements but are far more easily and consistently absorbed by the body in their naturally occurring state within venison.

Venison and particularly wild venison fits a broad and healthy diet that is 100% natural.  There is some evidence that ‘grass fed’ meats have higher quantities of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) that can assist in weight loss, decrease cancer risk and the risk of cardio vascular disease. Whilst we strongly feel that there is no such thing as a super food, venison is certainly about as healthy a choice of red meat as you can make.

Delicious

Venison is one of the tastiest and most rewarding meats to cook with – hitting a certain spot that other meats simply cannot come close to.  There is a real ‘wildness’ about the nuance of this nature-friendly meat.

Modern practices and strict chill chain supply mean that Scottish venison is one of the best tasting, fresh and flavoursome meats you could hope to buy. Loved by chefs and foodies across the world and internationally renowned as a premium product we know you will love giving it a try or using it more often. From curries and casseroles to loin steaks or slow roast shoulder there’s a whole world of flavour and texture to explore.

Cookery of venison requires some specific thought and small adaptations from some other red meats and due to some of its top tier health benefits it can be harder to get right than some people think at first. We recommend that if you have not cooked very much with venison before that you start with some of the more simple recipes available here and elsewhere and once you have some experience understanding how venison cooks slightly differently from some of its alternatives there will be no end to the culinary delights you can achieve – see our recipe section here.
