Quality Assurance

Scottish Quality Wild Venison (SQWV) is the industry’s own safeguard that the meat that reaches the consumer has been procured and handled to the highest standards.

Quality First

The SQWV scheme’s aims are to ensure that:

  • Scotland’s wild deer are being managed humanely.
  • Stalkers and deer managers undertaking their work are competent.
  • Product is well handled throughout the process and that premises are in order.
  • High food hygiene standards are adhered to through larder work, transport and storage.
  • SQWV assured venison is fully traceable.

SQWV is relevant to producers – the estates and deer forests from which wild
venison is procured – and a new SQWV brand licensing scheme for processors is also now in operation. SQWV, which is more than 25 years old, is voluntary and covers a significant proportion of all Scottish wild venison produced.

The scheme only applies to Scottish Wild Venison.
